We believe it is important to nurture the creativity, passion and individuality of each child at Alderbrook. Music is integral to the broad and comprehensive education we offer and we provide pupils with the opportunity to express themselves in a multitude of ways.
Pupils take part in a fantastic range of activities within the creative curriculum, from whole class lessons taught by a specialist teacher, to individual music lessons and clubs. These music lessons enhance the pupils’ understanding of the world around them and also broaden their experiences of music from a different time and place.
In Year 4, the school provides the pupils with a trumpet, and they take part in whole class brass lessons; these are led by the Wandsworth Music Service. As they move into Years 5 and 6, the pupils are encouraged to continue learning and are offered small group lessons.
Individual music lessons are available on a wide range of instruments and many pupils take up the opportunity to develop their skills and musical understanding. A small group of highly qualified peripatetic teachers offer lessons throughout the week. The instruments that we offer here at Alderbrook are: flute, clarinet, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, drums, piano, trumpet and keyboard. These lessons occur during the lunchtime and afternoon sessions.
Throughout the year, the pupils are given many opportunities to perform, whether it be as a whole school during singing assembly; during a production; as part of a class performance at International Morning; or as a soloist in a special music assembly.
One of the high points of the musical calendar is the trip to the O2, where the school choir join thousands of other children to sing at the Young Voices concert.
