Homework and Remote Education
Outlined below are our approaches to Homework and Home Learning in the event of class, year group or lockdown as a result of Covid-19.
Homework
The purpose of homework is to support learning in the classroom and to help our pupils develop into effective independent learners. Homework is set weekly and both English and Maths tasks come in the form of a ‘menu’, in which children choose the activities they would like to complete from a choice of 6. Homework is set and completed on 'google classroom'. Project based homework linked to foundation subjects is set termly.
At Alderbrook, homework is set through 'Google Classroom' and each child is provided with login details. If you have any queries about log in information, please speak to the school office.
Key Stage 1
- Reading, on a daily basis, both independently and with an adult
- Learning weekly spellings daily
- 3 English focus tasks
- 2 Maths focus tasks
Key Stage 2
- Reading, on a daily basis, both independently and with an adult
- Learning weekly spellings daily
- 3 English focus tasks
- 4 Maths focus tasks
Remote Learning at Alderbrook
We are committed to making sure that all children can continue to learn if they are unable to attend school in person. At Alderbrook we use Google Classroom
When Will Remote Learning Be Used?
- A class or year group is required to stay at home
- The school (or part of it) must close for safety reasons
- A local or national emergency restricts attendance
What Does Remote Learning Look Like?
- Mostly Asynchronous learning – independent tasks supported by recordings made by teachers
- Some Synchronous learning – live lessons
How Much Learning Will Be Set?
Following DfE guidance, our daily expectations are:
- Reception: Around 2 hours
- Key Stage 1 (Years 1–2): Around 3 hours
- Key Stage 2 (Years 3–6): Around 4 hours
Types of Learning Activities
- Daily recorded video sessions or sometimes live lessons
- Independent activities linked to the school curriculum
- Printed learning packs if needed
Where possible, we teach the same curriculum remotely as we do in school. Some subjects may need adaptations.
Supporting All Pupils
We recognise that every child’s home circumstances are different. We work closely with families to make sure all pupils can access remote education:
SEND support – additional guidance and resources planned with our Assistant Headteacher for Inclusion
Device loans – in the event of a closure, laptops or tablets are prioritised for:
- Pupils eligible for Free School Meals or the Pupil Premium
- Families without a device (1 per family)
- Families needing additional devices (where available)
Expectations for Parents and Pupils
- Participation is expected (Reception–Year 6; Nursery is optional)
- Pupils should register daily by completing assigned tasks
- Work should be submitted daily so teachers can respond
- Attendance and engagement are monitored
Safeguarding and Wellbeing
Remote learning is planned with safeguarding and wellbeing in mind:
- Teachers check in with pupils daily via the platform or if a live lesson is offered
- Online safety protocols are followed in line with Keeping Children Safe in Education (2025)
- Staff monitor pupil engagement and wellbeing, and support families where needed
