What to do if my child feels ill?

Covid-19 related pupil absence - A quick reference for parents

COVID SYMPTOMS:

HIGH TEMPERATURE – this means you feel hot to touch on your chest or back (you do not need to measure your temperature but if you have a thermometer this would be 37.8 or greater)

Has a NEW CONTINUOUS COUGH - this means coughing a lot more than usual in an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours

Has LOSS OF OR CHANGE TO SENSE OF SMELL OR TASTE – this means you’ve noticed that you cannot smell or taste anything

What to do if…

Return to school when…

My child has Covid-19 symptoms:

 

DO NOT COME TO SCHOOL

Contact school to inform us.

Self-isolate the whole household for 14 days.

Get a test.

INFORM THE SCHOOL IMMEDIATELY ABOUT TEST RESULT

If you are unsure about your child’s symptoms you can refer to information at: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/symptoms/

The test comes back negative.

My child tests positive for Covid-19

DO NOT COME TO SCHOOL

Contact school to inform us.

Agree an earliest date for possible return ----- minimum 10 days.

Self-isolate the whole household for 14 days.

The school will take guidance from Public Health England on what steps to take next.

If you can, inform everyone that has been in contact with your child in the last 2 days that they have Covid-19 symptoms.

When they feel better after a minimum of 10 days

They can return after 10 days even if they still have a loss of smell or taste.

They can return if they have a cough but have been confirmed as now testing negative for COVID

These symptoms can last for a number of weeks.

My child tests negative for Covid-19

CONTACT THE SCHOOL

Discuss when your child can come back to school (same/next day)

If symptoms persist, continue to self-isolate until they  clear (maximum 7 days)

Once agreed with the school.

All symptoms have cleared (up to 7 days)

My child falls ill with symptoms not linked with Covid-19

FOLLOW THE USUAL SCHOOL ABSENCE POLICY

Once your child feels better and/or symptoms have cleared, or after 48 hours following sickness/diarrhoea

Someone in my household has Covid-19 symptoms

DO NOT COME TO SCHOOL

CONTACT THE SCHOOL

Self-isolate the whole household for 14 days.

Get a test for the household member.

INFORM THE SCHOOL IMMEDIATELY ABOUT TEST RESULTS

The test returns negative 

Your child is showing no signs of Covid-19 symptoms.

Someone in my household tests positive for Covid--19

DO NOT COME TO SCHOOL

CONTACT THE SCHOOL

Agree an earliest date for return - minimum of 14 days

Self-isolate the whole household for 14 days.

INFORM THE SCHOOL IMMEDIATELY ABOUT TEST RESULTS

The child completes the period of isolation without showing any Covid-19 symptoms

Track & Trace has identified my child as having had close contact with a confirmed case of Covid-19

DO NOT COME TO SCHOOL

CONTACT THE SCHOOL

Agree an earliest date for return - minimum of 14 days

The child completes the period of isolation without showing any Covid-19 symptoms

My child has travelled and has to self-isolate for a period of quarantine

Do not request holiday absence in term-time unless in a family emergency

Consider quarantine requirements and FCO advice when booking trips.

Self-isolate the whole household.

Contact the school and agree an earliest date for possible return. Minimum 14 days.

The quarantine period has been completed.

My child has received medical advice that they need to resume shielding.

DO NOT COME TO SCHOOL

CONTACT THE SCHOOL

Shield until you are informed that restrictions are lifted and shielding is paused again.

School or medical professionals inform you that shielding has been lifted and your child can return to school.

My child’s bubble is closed due to a Covid-19 outbreak in school.

DO NOT COME TO SCHOOL

Support your child at home with remote education provided by school

Your child will need to isolate for 14 days

School will inform you when you can return your child to school.
